Future Risk

Landslide prediction can be a very difficult task, using significant amounts of resources to conduct a thorough prediction of landslide occurrence.9 Most landslide prediction methods are qualitative in nature and cannot provide absolute certainty in their prediction summary.3 Although, in the last couple of decades, examples of quantifying landslide hazards have shown a lot of promise in lowering uncertainty within current prediction models.3 This means that scientist now have a greater understanding of landslides and their nature; and as such, can confidently predict their occurrence, magnitude and direction with extensive modelling and spatial data techniques.3 Furthermore, with these more advanced prediction techniques, public safety against landslides is getting better.6

Mild – moderate landslides in Hallett Cove and the greater Adelaide region are generally sporadic and are not predicted with much, if any certainty due to the lack of resources.6 However, the frequency of public injury and/or death from mild – moderate landslides in Hallett Cove and the Adelaide area is very low and hence the need for prediction models is not currently necessary.9 For moderate – severe landslides, a landslide inventory can be constructed to show the location, volume, classification, activity, date of occurrence and other characteristics of landslides within the Adelaide area including Hallett Cove.8 Thus, a landslide inventory would allow the public to check for landslide hazards before building on sloped land or any other purpose it is required for.8

Hallett Cove and its coastal cliff region will likely continue to produce mild – moderate landslides predominately as rockfall although it is possible that severe landslides could occur possibly without any notice. The general Hallett Cove area is suceptable to landlides in the future due to its ground stucture and composition, sloping topography and history of landslide occurance. The potential danger in Hallett Cove for injury from landslide is quite low, although their still remains a real risk of dangerous landslides that should be cautioned throughout the entire suburb.9
